Leave Him Alone

ESPN is planning a documentary on Steve Bartman. Who is Steve Bartman you ask? He is the Cubs fan who, in game six of the 2003 NLCS, made the “mistake” of reaching for a foul ball that Cubs outfielder Moises Alou was trying to catch, possibly “interfering” with Alou’s attempt to make the play.

The Cubs were up 3-0 at the time and five outs away from their first World Series since 1945. After the “Bartman Play”, the Cubs unraveled, lost the game, then lost game 7 and are still in the midst of a horrible World Series drought. Problem is, many fans still blame Bartman for the loss and I doubt this documentary will do much to change that.

Bartman’s life was turned upside down after that one play and ESPN apparently does not want to let go of the incident anymore than some Cubs fans who still blame Bartman do. The Good news is that Bartman and the Cubs want no part of the project. I hope it stays that way.
